On Wednesday November 2, 2011 an believed 4,500 protesters became a member of Occupy Oakland's general strike in Downtown Concord. There have been various ethnic groups symbolized, in addition to any age, including parents who introduced their kids. Turnstyle spoke to Jaime Spector, who introduced her two-year-old daughter towards the strike and stated it was vital that each generation be symbolized there to ensure that the content would resonate broadly.

TS: Why do important that you should bring your daughter for this protest?

SPECTOR: Well, as you may know, there's no movement whether it does not have the decades. You need to have babies the ones in electric wheelchairs, you realize, [people] who aren't walking any longer ...everybody is area of the story and it is likely to be area of the solution. Be it the knowledge of youthful people indicating themselves towards the knowledge of elders indicating themselves, you realize everybody is an integral part. It is important on her to determine and learn and merely to participate.

TS: Could it be tough to show a 2-year-old why we are protesting and why a multitude of people in the roads?

SPECTOR: Not whatsoever. It's very easy. It is extremely simple, a two-year-old can comprehend it. The machine does not work, be it people needing to work lengthy hrs -- why shouldn't you be home if you need to work such a long time to create enough money to repay student debt, student financial loans? She's very intelligent, and she or he sees if there's destitute people in the pub which they are sitting and they've no home. She is aware that, any child can easily see that, how about we there is a home? I believe it's really pretty elementary.

Another mother attending the march described to her two sons why they were not in class on that day. Tahira Simon states you need to explain the strike to youngsters with a context they are able to connect with.

TAHIRA SIMON: I attempted to connect with the Civil Privileges movement which this is the way change happens with public policy. That individuals need to really organize and speak effectively and also have a true goal...Plus they understand the idea of money greatly because I'm constantly unemployed during the last 3 years and that we have needed to change our life styles considerably. So that they gone from getting a lavish lifestyle to we share a 1 bed room apartment, we do not have privacy. They begin to see the changes mother has needed to make due to incongruencies within our economy, so they are directly affected and that i attempt to show them this affects the quantity of mother can put towards your higher education. Sooner or later our conversations will begin to change, whether or otherwise college will probably be a choice whether it will likely be worthwhile.
