Salute ... just a little north-eastern Italia will come in King Valley.
Six Victorian vineyards are putting convivial prosecco into the spotlight, creates Gary Munro.
It had been, based on wine maker Mike Miranda, a concept born over coffee. The King Valley region in Victoria, already famous as Australia's home of Italian varietals, were built with a clutch of producers making prosecco, the sunshine, simple and convivial bubbly that originates from north-eastern Italia. Why don't you make ''a thing'' from it and employ it like a feature for that area?
There fundamentals were laid for that King Valley Prosecco Road, a collaboration among six from the region's vineyards - Chrismont, Brown Siblings, Dal Zotto, Mike Miranda, Ciccone and Pizzini.
Its origins date to 2000, when Otto Dal Zotto, who migrated to Australia and wound up within the valley in 1967, grown the area's first prosecco vines (propagated from clippings provided in 1997 by ''an Italian dude in Italy'', wine maker Michael Dal Zotto states), inspired by his early years in Valdobbiadene, home from the grape.
Until then, like the majority of the valley's Italian migrant families, he'd grown tobacco before embracing the vine. The Prosecco Road experience concentrates on types for example pinot grigio, sangiovese, arneis and nebbiolo.
We start in the sprawling Brown's. Its cavernous tasting room showcases its 50-odd wines, all on tasting along with a significant chunk available limited to the cellar door.
Our next stop has us backtracking to Oxley at the beginning of the valley, to Mike Miranda's operation, using its distinctive tower rising over the cellar door.
The affable Miranda, who swapped the futures buying and selling floor for wine making, echoes sentiments that although prosecco is frequently regarded as being an aperitif, it do not need to do it yourself. ''It's surprising how good it stacks up to food,'' he states.
Dal Zotto produces two proseccos, the Pucino and flagship L'Immigrante, which undergoes its secondary ferment within the bottle, creating a drier style.
Regardless of the enticing prospect of residual, particularly using the weather turning nasty, we are (over)due in the road at Pizzini, to satisfy Fred Pizzini and the wife, Katrina, a noted prepare and author from the A tavola! cook book, at their lately broadened cellar door.
Our final stop, Chrismont, operates by Arnie Pizzini. We are given a led tour from the vineyard and taste in the tanks once we go. Some are prepared for bottling, some not. There is something special about tasting nebbiolo determined to sit within the barrel for an additional 5 years.
Gary Munro travelled thanks to Tourism Victoria and also the operators.
