Nobody could accuse Ryan Murphy to be a 1-trick pony. In 1999 he produced the teenager comedy-drama Popular. Then came the glossy and nasty medical series Puppy nip/Tuck, six seasons of sex, violence, ugly feelings and plastic surgery. On that production, Murphy teamed with author Kaira Falchuk plus they continued to produce an unlikely TV hit within the sparkly senior high school musical Glee, using its sunny messages of pride and tolerance.

This hot duo has develop a creepy horror series that returns with a past preoccupations - high-school terrors, strange medicine - and blends them right into a haunted-house tale.

The Harmon family - mental health specialist Ben (Dylan McDermott in the Practice), broken cellist Vivien (Connie Britton from Spin City and Friday Evening Lights) as well as their teenage daughter Purple (Taissa Farmiga) - go west with the hope of the new beginning. They create their house within an imposing house with past nasty deaths and therefore are rapidly encircled by various menacing spirits, living and dead. They vary from intrusive neighbour Constance (Jessica Lange) and her ''mongoloid'' daughter Adelaide (Jamie Maker) towards the housekeeper Moira (Frances Conroy/Alexandra Breckenridge), who seems aged and rheumy-eyed to Viv and just like a sexy and alluring youthful redhead to Ben.

Too, there is a troubled teen patient of Ben's that has anger-management issues and fantasises in regards to a school massacre at his hands. Plus there is the damaged guy hiding outside, in addition to a jerk to Rosemary's Baby, up-to-date here to involve a rubber fetish suit. The clever, spooky and plot-packed first episode cracks open this writhing can of earthworms with relish but came from here, the prosperity of the series is dependent how it may sustain the suspense and develop the first plethora of plotlines whilst producing brand new ones.
