It is a bittersweet experience watching these three films, which marked Buster Keaton's entry in to the talkies &mdash and the exit from movie fame.

While creating probably the most memorable comedies from the quiet era, particularly "The OverallInch (1926), Keaton loved autonomy as star, author, director, stunt coordinator and, most famously, stuntman. But he sacrificed a lot of that control together with his infamous proceed to MGM because the quiet era came to some close. (He later known as it the greatest blunder of his career.)

This willful surrender would be a pattern on-screen and off. Throughout this era, Keaton's private existence grew to become a shambles, largely because of an acrimonious divorce (from first wife Natalie Talmadge), by which he was refused visitation rights of his two beloved sons. Crestfallen, Keaton went into full-on self-destruction mode. He did not battle to save his finances within the divorce, and started consuming heavily &mdash blackout heavily.

Meanwhile, Keaton's heart wasn't forever in the ten films he earned for MGM, nor were the automobiles always suitable for him.

The good thing is that "Doughboys" (1930), "Pathways of recent You are able to" (1931) and "What! No Beer?" (1933) are funny, well-made comedies by which Keaton encored the smoothness he'd always hung his trademark "pork cake" hat on: the stone-faced (obviously), new dreamer who pined away for that girl and risked his neck to win her affection. Keaton also does some dazzling stuntwork in most three.

&bull The very best of the bunch may be the first talkie to star Keaton, the The First World War comedy "Doughboys," with a setup we have observed in other Keaton films.

Keaton plays Elmer (a popular character title from the comedian's), a high-hatted socialite who falls deeply in love with common girl Mary (Sally Eilers). She's not impressed with Elmer's wealth &mdash until she sees him within an military uniform. (Elmer, thinking he's employing a chauffeur in an employment agency, accidentally enlists.)

Comic support is supplied by High cliff Edwards (a celebrity singer and ukulele player, later the voice of Jiminy Cricket) as Elmer's oddball friend, and gruff fireplug Erectile dysfunction Brophy his or her sadistic sergeant. Keaton wears drag while carrying out an "Apache dance" (a kind of tango), and scat-sings a ukulele duet with Edwards.

&bull "Pathways of recent You are able to" was co-directed by Jules Whitened, who'd produce, and frequently direct, the 3 Stooges shorts (as well as 10 shorts Keaton designed for Columbia within the nineteen forties).

Keaton is again wealthy, again attempting to win one's heart of the girl below his station. Heretofore an uncaring slumlord, he decides to construct a gym for underprivileged kids as he discovers that the slum urchin (Norman Phillips Junior.) may be the little brother of his intended (Anita Page). Edwards, sans ukulele, returns as Keaton's groveling assistant.

"Pathways" includes a Warner Bros. feel, using its Stalemate Kids-esque gang and dramatic gangster subplot. Keaton works an incredible stunt by which he advances off a staircase onto a table, leading to a flowerpot to fly upright, that they then catches.

&bull "What! No Beer?" may be the final film Keaton designed for MGM &mdash they fired him &mdash and also the third by which he was teamed with Jimmy Durante. True, Keaton's subtle, sensitive character is bulldozed by Durante's unceasing bluster, but it is not the finish around the globe.

Keaton plays Elmer (there's that title again), a timid taxidermist who funds Durante's plan to purchase a brewery around the eve from the repeal of Prohibition.

"Beer" is really a time capsule of the anticipatory period in American history. Figures are recognized as "wets" or "drys." The poster shows Keaton and Durante consuming beer using the slogan: "Have you ever heard what's promising yet?" And also the film finishes with Durante going to gulp from the foamy mug, telling the crowd: "It will not be lengthy now!"

After his tenure at MGM, Keaton floundered &mdash he was briefly married to his rehab nurse &mdash but later came back to Hollywood like a "gag guy," a script physician of sorts. By levels, he came back towards the screen and resided to determine a revival of his recognition. His final film, "An Interesting Factor Happened in order to the Forum," was launched in 1966, the entire year he died at 70. Inside it, he used a toga &mdash along with a pork cake hat.

Gunsmoke: The 5th Season Volume 2
$36.99, Vital

Like Bedrock and Mayberry, Dodge City is really a TV town we all know every corner of. There is the marshal's office, where fair-minded Matt Dillon (James Arness) and the slow-witted deputy Chester (Dennis Weaver) possess a little Andy Taylor/Barney Fife factor happening. There is the quarters of Doc (Milburn Stone) &mdash no title, just "Doc" &mdash who are able to search a bullet from your arm blindfolded. They wet their whistles in the Lengthy Branch Saloon, where verrry friendly working women snuggle with cowboys underneath the careful eye of Miss Cat (Amanda Blake), herself a sight in fishnet and down.

The 19 crisp, black-and-whitened episodes about this three-disc set were initially broadcast between The month of january and June 1960, throughout the 5th of 20 seasons of "Gunsmoke" &mdash an archive for any live-action primetime series until "Law & Order" arrived.

Standout episodes include "Crowbait Bob," where the town drunk (Hank Patterson, Mr. Ziffel on "Eco-friendly Acres") dies, departing Miss Cat a locked box of his possessions, which sets tongues wagging in Dodge "The Exurbanites," by which Chester sobs because he states a touching prayer for Doc, who's shot and stranded around the prairie and "The Bobsy Twins," an "Arsenic and Old Lace"-like tale by which two creepy siblings (veteran character stars Morris Ankrum and Rob Moody) journey to Dodge having a murderous mission.
